When it comes to finding a job, does the Net Work?

Last week I attended a networking session – not a session with organized networking, rather one that teaches and encourages and motivates marketing people how to network better.
Before I dive in, though, let me tell you WHY I attended.
1. I need more work, whether I continue to freelance as I've been doing for about a year now, or find my place as a full time employee with an awesome company and an even awesomer manager.
2. It was put on by a Minneapolis woman who knows everyone, who is respected by everyone and who has actual experience and knowledge to share.
3. It's time to get out of my comfort zone. And by comfort zone I mean sweatpants. And by sweatpants I mean pajamas.
So back to the session. Here are the highlights of what I learned, in no particular order:
1. Volunteer, either for a relevant professional organization or something in your community. Get out there and give of your time, energy and self.
2. Create a blog. Then keep it going.
3. Network. I know, seemed pretty obvious to me too. But if you want or need change, you gotta (net)work for it. I know a lot of talented, connected people and they know a lot of talented, connected people, and so on and so on and so on. Don't give up. Keep talking and asking and exploring.
4. I'm not alone in this and I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.
5. Statistically speaking, blindly applying for jobs online probably isn't going to lead to that dream gig. It should of course be part of the process, but volunteering and blogging and networking will surely prove to be more effective.
Feel free to message me if you are interested in networking, hiring me (did I mention that I'm an accomplished creative director/strategist/writer?) or learning more about the session I attended. #creativedirectorforhire #communicationsexpert #writer #creativestrategist #hireme
